They were laser focused on the life and stories of Jesus.
While we have gleaned the grand purposes of Jesus' life in our teachings, the first followers benefitted from something else: the small details. The minutiae of his life talked louder to them than it does to us. Jesus' stories consumed them and flowed into their conversations, preaching, evangelism, and discipleship.
Such an emphasis on story encompassed both what he taught and lived--all of which forms the earliest definition of the critical word of proclamation: ‘kerygma’.
If we the church are to regain the power of the gospel, the potential of the earliest disciples, and the ability to garner the attention of a secular world, we would be wise to recapture the Jesus Stories: the original “way” of Jesus.
